On the 3rd of October, the Jacobs University Rowing team participated in the Bremer Meisterschaft on Werdersee.
The day started with an unpleasant surprise for the people living on campus: Due to the public holiday, the serveries were only scheduled to open at 10:30 am for breakfast. We on the other hand were scheduled to leave campus no later than 10:00 am. Grumpy and with empty stomachs we headed out to downtown Bremen, following Lars’ very specific instructions: “Genau, you just have to go to where the playground is!”
We arrived and met up with the rest of the team and started unloading the trailer and rigging the boats. The weather was very nice and despite the empty stomachs the atmosphere was great.
The racing day started off with very close Gig – Mixed – Quads 500 m race against the University of Bremen. We came in 2nd and 3rd place and would have surely caught up to the first boat, if the race had been just a bit longer. The women’s quad managed to recover from a shaky start and greatly improved throughout the race. Paula Prondzinsky and Leonie Kühne gave it all they had and brought home a victory in a double!
The men’s eight race against Bremer Sport Club was a big surprise: We were expecting our competition to quickly leave us behind during the first 350 m, but instead of the expected struggle, we had a really strong start and it just got better from there! After a power piece at approximately 600 meters we managed not only to be faster than them, but crossed the finish line with over a boat’s length between us.
After a great day, we loaded the boats on the trailer and drove back to campus to finally have some food and celebrate our successful Bremer Meisterschaft!
