Fari Cup 2009 – Jacobs University in Hamburg

FARI-Cup 2009 Gig 8x
Bremen, 12.11.’09

This Sunday the three Jacobs University Rowing teams had to prove their endurance. Instead of the typical 2k race the two Women’s 4-Race Boats competed in the 4k race, and the Men’s 8-Rig Boat had to row for eight kilometers, all on the Hamburg river “Alster”.

Long before sun rise the teams left the Campus in the hope to return yet with another victory. The event which included over 100 boats, did not only ask for excellent rowing, but on the narrow curves of the Alster, the coxswains were expected to be in utmost control of steering the boats. On the long way to the starting line, the teams had the possibility to get to know the track before a longer period of time lay ahead of them – time to wait for the start and remember that emptying the bladder before the race would in fact have been a good idea. But when the time had come to start, all teams were well prepared and eager to maintain the distance to the boat starting after them as well as catching up to the boat that had started only 30 seconds, and one minute respectively, ahead of them.

While the Women’s four with their strong performance managed to rank 4 and 7 out of seven, the Men’s eight came in at an unexpectedly fast time of 31 minutes and 31 seconds. On the way through bridges, along curves of the Alster, and in between boats that the teams were passing, all coxswains managed to keep control over the boats, even if at times the concrete masses of walls and bridges ended up being a lot closer to the boats than usually…

After all the long Rowing Sunday in Hamburg was yet another success for all sixteen rowers, three coxswains and two coaches, of which one successfully participated in the race with his team as well. With the experience collected in Hamburg, everyone is now looking forward to the race in Kettwig and of course the Ergo Cup coming up in February.
