Training in the new racing 8

6am in the morning, barely 6 degrees outside and less than 60 days left until the Hanse Rowing Cup 2010. The boys crew is training intensively in the brand new racing 8 boat. It is an exciting challenge for the rowers at Jacobs and judging by the first trainings, the season looks promising! The new boat that the rowing team received from their sponsor, Lürssen, still needs a name and the christening ceremony will take place soon this season.

Another new addition to the rowing team is Jacob Dein. Jacob is one of the 19 exchange students from Lafayette College (Easton, Pennsylvania). He is a very experienced rower, being in the Lafayette Crew Club for more than two years. Even though there are a lot of differences between rowing at Lafayette and rowing at Jacobs, Jake is excited about training with a different coach and different boats since he argues that in this way he can improve his own technique. We are all very happy to have him in our team, since he is for sure of great help.

This coming weekend the whole crew is going to Amsterdam to take part in a beginners’ race on the river Amstel. The boys are going to compete for the first time in the new racing 8 boat while the girls will participate in a coxed 4. We are really confident that the first regatta of this semester will be a succesful event. More information about the event in Amsterdam can be found here.
